    About

This is a study for the left compartment of the picture illustrating Canto V of Dante's, 'Inferno', in which theyoung lovers, Paolo and Francesca da Rimini, are caught in the act of kissing, as they sit before a circular window. An open book lies on the man's knees, about to fall to the ground. Graphite, 1855(?). The artist, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, had been named after the famous Italian poet, after his father had written a commentary on the poet. He was therefore familiar with Dante's work, and created this piece to illustrate the famous passage from the "Divine Comedy".
