    About

The first part of Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual was published in 1679 by its author and compiler, Wang Gai. The preface was written by Li Yu (1611--c. 1680), whose estate near Nanjing was called the Mustard Seed Garden. Two more parts were published in 1701 (cat. 15- -16). The manual has a more art-historical and didactic approach than its predecessor, Ten Bamboo Studio Collection of Calligraphy andPainting (cat. 10- -13). Part I is dedicated to landscape painting. This print was taken from a later edition of Part I, volume five, that introduces landscape compositions after famous masters using multicoloured printing. For this impression, two to three printing blocks with varying tonalities of black ink were used. The image depicts a scholar in his studio under Wutong trees flanked by a mountain cliff. The inscription cites the title of a painting by Shen Zhou (1427--1509), one of the leading literati painters of the Ming dynasty. Shen Zhou painted landscapes in vigorous and broad brushstrokes with a variety of ink tones. It is quite possible that Wang Gai, who painted this image and left his seals on this print, never saw the original himself, but made a landscape in what he considered to be the style of Shen Zhou’s pantings.
