    About

Lu Xun was arguably the most influential cultural figure in China’s revolution. Writing in the vernacular, shaking up the social and political systems, he stimulated generations of writers and artists. In the late 1920s and 1930s, he published and exhibited art from Europe, the Soviet Union and Japan, circulating prints as an instrument for social change. Black-and-white prints were cheap to make and distribute. Their dramatic contrasts expressed powerful messages of protest and resistance. This print commemorates an iconic event generally regarded as the birth of the Modern Woodcut Movement in China. In August 1931, Lu Xun organized a six-day practical workshop in woodcuts, taught by Uchiyama Kakichi (1900-1984), the younger brother of the Shanghai bookstore owner Kanz (1885-1959). The thirteen participants represented several art colleges and societies and included Jiang Feng (1910-1982), a pivotal figure of the Chinese art world for decades. Since the 1980s, there has been a revival of black- and-white prints. Lu Xun remains the inspiration for, and the subject of, innumerable black-and-white woodcuts. Gan Zhenglun was born in Beijing. He graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou in 1957 and served as a teacher there for many years.
