    About

The original of this print was bound in an eighteenth-century album originally containing thirty-four of Ripa’s engravings of the Mountain Villa to Escape the Heat. The museums album bears the bookplate of Chiswick House Library, and this has been interpreted as evidence that it belonged to the influential patron of the arts Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington. In 1724 Ripa came to England, where he was received by King George I and was no doubt introduced to London society. It has been suggested that his engravings of the Mountain Villa influenced the emergence in the eighteenth century of the landscape or natural style of gardening associated with William Kent, Burlington’s protégé. The Chiswick gardens themselves were redesigned by Burlington and Kent in the early decades of that century. Ripa’s engravings provided a rare visual record of gardens in China, which were known in England almost exclusively through literary accounts. Chinese gardens were said to be characterized by a taste for irregularity rather than symmetry, large expanses of water, craggy rock formations, prominent hills, pavilions and their overall conception as a series of views. The French called the new European landscape style ‘anglo- chinois’.
