    About

The image shows Yang Guifei (d. ad 756), the famous concubine of the Tang emperor Minghuang (r. 713--56), together with a scholar- official in her peony garden. The male figure in the background may be the emperor himself. Minghuang’s passion for Yang Guifei, her beauty and fondness of peony flowers, as well as her tragic death by strangulation made her the subject of novels, operas, poems and paintings. Similarities between this and the preceding print in style, colouring and facial appearance suggest that the two sheets may have been produced in the same print shop.
