    About

When in 1845 the artist George Scharf made a pre-demolition series of studies of Monatgu House, the first building to house the British Museum, he included a view that appears unusual now: a grand staircase with three stuffed giraffes and a rhinoceros. Until the zoological, botanical and geological collections moved to the present Natural History Museum at South Kensington (built in 1881), the British Museum had included natural history firmly within its remit; it was one of the major concerns of Sir Hans Sloane, the physician who founded the collection.
