    About

A popular print from the 1790s representing the world upside down in sixteen compartments, with animals behaving like men, flying fishes, women adopting the role of men and the earth above the sky, produced by an anonymous artist. 'The world upside-down' was a common theme in popular imagery of the time. The idea of a 'natural' order in society meant that reversing the order was easily understood as nonsensical: a joke. For example at the time people heavily relied on animals and the print shows a few sinister scenes suggesting animal revenge and uprising.
