    About

This study of a woman is one of many sketches by the French Impressionist painter and printmaker, Camille Pissarro, which feature and embrace the life of peasants, and were later used in his paintings. Pissarro was one of only a few artists (such as Edgar Degas) of the Impressionist movement to use preparatory sketches in this fashion. This woman is seen from behind in three-quarter length, with her head in profile to the right, arms in front. She is wearing a pale blue apron which provides the onlu colour in this drawing. Black, blue and white chalk, on grey paper, 1845-1903.
