The ancient game of Mancala is one of the world’s most widely-played games, with hundreds of variations known throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Played since the time of the Pharaohs, it is still very popular today.
This game set makes a great history gift for kids. Provided is a beautiful solid wood playing board (measuring 44cm by 13cm) and colourful glass beads as playing pieces.
The playing board is composed of six pits on each side of the board, and a larger scoring pit (called a Mancala) on each side. Two players sit across from each other over the board. The aim of the game is to collect as many gems in your Mancala (pit) as possible.
More about how to play Mancala
You and your opponent take turns to move the gems from one pit to another. To begin, you select any of the pits and pick up the beads in it, then you place one of the beads in the following pits. If your final bead lands in the Mancala then you get another go. You also get the opportunity to steal your opponents beads if your final bead lands in an empty pit on your side of the board (you can then take any beads on the opposite side, your opponents, and put them in your Mancala). The game ends when one side of the board has no beads left in the pits.
This is an amazingly addictive yet very simple game.
