Decorative carved brown jade ‘bi’ disc on a metal stand.

Bi discs are sometimes regarded as a symbol of heaven and wealth. A Chinese jade bi disc from c. 1200 BC is held in the collection of the British Museum. Similar discs have been found in the tombs of ancient Chinese aristocrats but their original function remains unclear.

The earliest bi were produced in the Neolithic period, particularly by the Liangzhu culture (3400–2250 BC). Later examples date mainly from the Shang, Zhou and Han dynasties.
