Figures like these have been found in countless Egyptian tombs, and they are thought to have been placed there to re- create a suitable environment for the gods of the afterlife.

Hippos were identified with the Goddess Thoeris, who was thought to bring luck and protection, and with Seth, the god of storms. The hippo is decorated with marsh plants and flowers symbolic of their habitat.

This glazed earthenware figure measures 14cm wide and is hand-fired and finished.
