From Enlightenment to Romanticism
An Open University study day at the British Museum

Through lectures and gallery visits, this day considers topics including Robert Adam and his circle of enlightened Grand Tourists, aspects of public science in the Enlightenment, Wedgwood, the enlightened industrialist, the Cult of Styles and the exotic. This study day focuses particularly on the Enlightenment Gallery but also offers an understanding of why the British Museum’s collection was established in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is also a special viewing of Delacroix’s original lithographs of Faust. Open to Open University students and the public.

Hajj: a journey of faith

A day of talks by British and international specialists on the historical development, religious context and art of Hajj, chaired by Exhibition Curator Venetia Porter. Themes include the role of Hajj within Islam, its history, travel over the centuries, the role of Hajj across the world including Britain, related art, and the logistics of organising massive numbers of pilgrims across Saudi Arabia and Mecca.

The Renaissance reconsidered

This study day considers through lectures and gallery visits the range of drawings, prints, ceramics and medals in the Museum’s collection which offer a window onto a world of far-ranging trade routes and international influence. Lectures, gallery talks and a film explore themes of Renaissance drawing workshop practice, Dürer in Venice on the eve of the Golden Age, Michelangelo as a draughtsman, the role of medals, and Renaissance and Reformation.
Open to Open University students and the public.
