  • The female head in profile, was traditionally known as the 'Marchesa di Pescara', an apocryphal title disseminated by Antonio Tempesta's renowned engraving of 1613. This identification is apocryphal since Michelangelo's close friendship with the noble Roman, Vittoria Colonna. This title may have been in part suggested by the fish-scale pattern of the figure's headpiece. Tempesta paired this female portrait with another of Michelangelo's ideal heads
