This research publication is the first part of a new two-volume catalogue collating the British Museum's collection of Egyptian stelae.

Stelae are stone monuments that were used in many different ways in ancient Egyptian society, including as tombstones, as offerings to gods and as commemorative monuments.

The title specifically covers British Museum stelae from the Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate Period, the largest collection of Middle Kingdom stelae outside Egypt. Each stela includes a full-page image, detailed description, full translation and commentary.

The importance of each stela within its historical and social context is discussed, as well as aspects of epigraphy (inscriptions considered as a group) and iconography (the pictorial illustrations). Wherever possible stela owners are identified and family trees given.

This is an outstanding work of scholarship by unrivalled authorities in the field.
