This gold embossed leather box has the word 'Love' illustrated in decorative Arabic Diwani script on the lid, with space inside for jewellery or other small items.
The leather boxes are all made in the busy district of old Cairo, Egypt, the original Fatimid capital of Fustat. In the 7th century this area was little more than a "city of tents". Today old Cairo is the place to find some of the oldest churches, mosques and synagogues in Africa and the Middle East. The designs on these boxes were mostly traditional Arabesque (geometric designs typical of Islamic art) and the most famous and awe-inspiring site in Egypt, the Pyramids - built over 5000 years ago. -
