Medieval Cross earrings

  • Made with glass stones, the original gold cross these earrings are inspired by is set with four amethysts on the front and a central ruby on the reverse. It was probably worn on a chain around the neck as similar jewellery is documented elsewhere. It was buried with gold coins and jewellery in 1464 at Fishpool, Nottinghamshire. As this was during the wars of the Roses it is likely that the items where hidden for safe-keeping. Moulded from the original in the Department of Medieval and Later Antiquities.
