This beautiful Lion Head bracelet is based on an original from Greece circa 450-400 BC that currently resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
As far back as the late 4th millenium BC, the lion has symbolised power, both secular and divine. From the 6th century on, lion heads became a popular motif on jewellery in various parts of the Greek world. In the Museum's collection there is a pair of matching bracelets from Cyprus circa 450-400 BC. Crafted in gold with a copper- alloy core, they feature finals with a lion's head; they also incorporate a trick that artisans have used for centuries to give bracelets a flexibility enabling the bracelet to be twisted on or off the wrist. This reproduction of the original is made of sterling silver that has been plated with 24k gold. -
