Rosetta Stone plaque
The Rosetta Stone has been housed at the British Museum since 1802, and is one of the Museum's best known exhibits. It was discovered in 1799, by which time all knowledge of the Ancient Egyptian language and writing had been lost for over 1,000 years; however, the Stone's inscription helped scholars to decipher the two Egyptian scripts - one written with hieroglyphs and one in the cursive demotic script - from the Greek section at the bottom. This reduced-size copy measures 12 x 10 x 5/8 inch and is fitted at the back with a loop for wall hanging.
