Created especially for the British Museum, this small fridge magnet is based on an ancient Greek plate dated to around 440BC-430BC.

The plate is a kylix, a type of wine- drinking cup. The decorations on the kylix portray a scene from Greek mythology: Theseus slaying the Minotaur. King Theseus was a hero and legendary king of Athens whilst the Minotaur was a part bull, part man creature who hid in the middle of a maze on the island of Crete. Theseus managed to find his way in, kill the monster then get out again safely by following a ball of string that he had unwound on the way in.

Based on the original piece in the Museum collection, the magnet is a reminder of the very distinctive and fine types of pottery that the Greeks developed some 2,000 years ago.
