    About

Created especially for the British Museum, this small novelty magnet is based on an ancient Greek pot dated to around 440BC-430BC. The original was a prize for a victor at the Athenian games.

The decorations on the vase portray chariot racing, which was the most popular spectator sport of ancient times. The vase belongs to a distinctive type given as a prize to the winner of the chariot race in the games held at Athens during the yearly festival known as the Panathenaia. The festival honoured Athena, the city's patron deity. The vase would have been one of 140, each containing 40 litres of olive oil, given to the winner.

The original piece resides in the Museum collection. It was found in Cyrenaica, modern Libya. This small-scale interpretation serves as a reminder of the very distinctive and fine types of pottery that the Greeks developed some 2,000 years ago.
