Modern Chinese design: a talk by artist Qiong Er Jiang (蒋琼耳)

Friday 10 November 2017, 14.30-15.30
Stevenson Lecture Theatre
Free, booking essential

A red modern lacquer box designed by Shanghai-based artist Qiong Er Jiang (蒋琼耳) is one of the Museum's latest acquisitions. It is on display in the newly refurbished Sir Joseph Hotung Gallery of China and South Asia (Room 33).

Made in Anhui province by master Erke Gan (甘而可), the box perfectly embodies the cultural heritage of Chinese lacquer making, a tradition that has continued for thousands of years. To mark the reopening of Room 33, Qiong Er Jiang will talk about how she revitalises old crafts with her contemporary design, bringing Chinese tradition into the 21st century.
