    About

This art print shows a view over Smithfield Market in London, created by the London printmaker Richard Gilson Reeve in 1831. The image shows sheep in pens in the square, cattle surrounding the pens, men milling amongst livestock and a bull attacking a man who has fallen in foreground. Up until 1855 Smithfield Market in central London was a cattle market. Here livestock were brought into the city for slaughter. This lively artwork shows the market in full swing, with traders bartering and examining cattle around pens.
