The Reading Room of the British Museum has a special place in the history of human knowledge and literature. Here for almost 150 years scholars, writers, artists, musicians, revolutionaries and scientists came to consult the greatest library in the world.
This souvenir book shows the Reading Room as it is today restored to its original splendour and also traces its history and unique construction features. The book glimpses into the life of the Reading Room and the famous and infamous readers who worked there.
Photographs from the British Museum Archives, including early sepia prints, are complemented by new photography showing the Reading Room meticulously restored.
