    About

A stereoscopic photograph of the Reptile Gallery, by the Museum photographer Roger Fenton c. 1858.

This photograph shows a view inside the Reptile Gallery at the British Museum as it appeared in the 1850s. Now natural collections are housed in the Natural History Museum at South Kensington, but in the 1850s the British Museum housed a large collection of natural exhibits, such as this 'Gigantic Irish Deer'.

Reproduced here as a print on archive quality paper (remains colour-true for 100 years), it serves as a realistic portrayal of the Museum over 150 years ago.
