    About

A tree pendant necklace, hand-crafted in Greece using the ancient art of glyptology.

Glyptology is the art of engraving gems with diamond tools - a particularly difficult and precise art form.

The glyptic arts began in ancient Greece and Egypt. Early examples of this art form can be seen in the British Museum (in Rooms 13 and 22).

This necklace forms part of a range of glyptic jewellery by Cosmochaos - a highly-regarded studio based in Athens, Greece. This group of artists create contemporary jewellery; their work encompasses the modern revival of the ancient art of glyptology.

The unique necklace is exclusive to the British Museum.

    More about glyptic art jewellery

The glyptic arts began in Ancient Greece and Egypt.

There followed a long hiatus, which in the 19th and 20th centuries was broken by the stunning work of Cecil Thomas in the UK, who was a master in miniature carvings on gemstones.

Cecil Thomas had a student and heir who went to Greece and established a school of gemology and glyptology. The young members of Cosmochaos were students at that school and are devoted to carrying on the work of their teacher in a line that stretches back to antiquity.
