    About

This silver necklace features two colourful gem stones which can be found in Afghanistan, the rich blue Lapis Lazuli, and deep green Chrysocolla.

Gems and stones which are indigenous to Afghanistan include Lapis Lazuli, Chrysocolla, Aquamarine, Kunzite, Ruby, Sapphire, Amethyst, Emerald, Tourmaline and Garnet. These incredible gems, traded for millennia along the legendary Silk Route in the bustling bazaars of both east and west, are once again reclaiming their rightful place in the world market. This pendant is part of a collaboration between the renowned designer and anthropologist Pippa Small and Turquoise Mountain, who have created a unique jewellery collection inspired by traditional Afghan designs and motifs celebrating the spirit and history of this extraordinary land.

Afghanistan was the source of lapis lazuli for the ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations, as well as the later Greeks and Romans. The best lapis lazuli is found in Badakhshan province in north-eastern Afghanistan and has been used for millennia in jewellery. The word lazuli is derived ultimately from the Persian lāzhward, the name of a place where it was mined and which came to be associated with the stone and, eventually, with its colour.
