The Latin phrase amor vincit omnia translates as 'love conquers all', a motto known to all students of English literature as the one engraved on the brooch worn by the Prioress in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. This necklace has been adapted from the engraving and style of an original medieval ring, now in the collections of the British Museum.

Inscribed rings are found as early as classical times when the inscriptions were usually dedicatory. Poesy rings reached their greatest popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries in England and France when they were used as a lover's token, a wedding ring or simply as a means of showing regard or giving a gift. Their popularity in Elizabethan England is attested to by their frequent mention in Shakespeare's plays.
