This bookend has been inspired by an original sculpture dating from the Ptolemaic period. The bookend shows an Egyptian King wearing the 'nemes', the striped headcloth worn by pharaohs in ancient Egypt.

The small sculpture is usually considered to be a sculptor's trial piece made of Schist. The sculpture was marked with a grid pattern on the back so that it could be scaled up to a much larger piece by the craftsman, and would have been smoothed to this fine finish using sand.

This is an attractive and unusual piece that will add a touch of Ancient Egyptian glamour to any home, on its own or bought with another as a pair.
