  • The Age of Exploration Globe is a detailed reproduction of a 1745 globe by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy, a French mapmaker. The globe is called 'The Age of Exploration' because it captures the rapid advancements in mapmaking and geography that were taking place at the time.

The fact that relatively accurate globes were made centuries ago speaks for the sophistication of early science and cartography. This globe is an early document of history- giving an accurate picture of the world as it was known in 1745. It was created by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy, and son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy, who were the leading map makers in France during the 1700s; King Louis XV appointed him has his geographer in 1760.

This smaller reproduction is hand crafted using many of the same techniques used to produce the originals. At 3.25 inches wide, the globe is small and light enough to make an enchanting Christmas tree decoration. Alternatively, the globe can be stood on a display stand (as used for the Eye of Time Clock).

    An intriguing historical ornament.
