    About

A photographic print of a marble relief from a house in Pompeii. The marble relief is Greek in style and shows a ceremony in front of a statue of Bacchus (also known as Dionysus, the god of wine), who is shown to the left. Two figures, with male features but rather odd clothing stand in front of the statue. Behind them is an older man turning towards a maenad (a female follower of Bacchus) who approaches from the right. The Romans called such a relief sculpture a typus. Over sixteen have been found from Pompeii and Herculaneum, showing the wealth and refinement of some of its citizens.
