A replica statuette of Socrates, an Ancient Greek philosopher. The original marble artefact is in the collections of the Department of Greece and Rome in the British Museum. It was found in Alexandria, and is thought to be either an Hellenistic original dating to the 2nd century BCE, or a Roman copy.
Socrates who was from Ancient Athens, had a profound impact on ancient and modern philosophy.
Little is known about his life except for the stories from his students. He married a younger woman called Xanthippe and had three sons.
Socrates did not have appearance of the 'ideal Athenian masculinity'. However, he was a great believer of the importance and power of the mind.
