The Chinese edition of Two Peonies of the Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual appeared in the early Qing period. There seem to be very few surviving copies of the original prints. Mustard Seed Garden Manual was as important in Japan as it was in China. However, the Japanese edition does not map one-to-one with the original 1679/1701 Chinese edition. The first part of the Japanese publishing venture was realized by the Kananro bookshop in Kyoto in 1748. This section featured plant, bird and insect images from Part III of the Chinese edition, as well as some of the basic instructional pages from Part I. Most of the rest of the Chinese edition was issued by the same publisher five years later, in 1753. Somewhat curiously, the Japanese edition of Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual (and of Ten Bamboo Studio Collection) picked up many of the innovations of the Chinese printing style, especially the gradation of colour from one side of a block of the other.
