Exclusive to the British Museum, a greetings card inspired by a 19th century Tibetan thangka depicting the 21 Taras.

This card forms part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Feminine power: the divine to the demonic.

The card is printed in the UK and includes an envelope. The inside of the card is blank for your message, and the card and envelope are sealed with a removable paper sticker, avoiding the need for excess plastic packaging.

The card is based on a Tibetan thangka (painting on a hanging cloth) which is illustrated with representations of the 21 Taras. In different branches of Buddhism, Tara is worshipped varyingly as a Buddha, a Bodhisattva or a goddess, and is the embodiment of compassionate wisdom. Her name means ‘She who Carries Across’, and she is known for being astonishingly beautiful and serene. Tara often manifests in 21 forms representing the range of her powers, collectively celebrated in the ‘Twenty-one praises of Tara and their benefits’ liturgy, and each Tara manifestation is associated with protection from a different fear or ailment. The Green Tara, depicted as the central largest figure on the thangka, is the main Tara; the Taras above the Green Tara reflect her peaceful qualities, while the lower Taras show her fierce and powerful nature.

A stunning example of the beauty of Tibetan art.
