The original coin from c.480 BC depicts the goddess Aphrodite holding the ‘Golden Apple of Discord’. In the Homeric tale of the Iliad, Prince Paris of Troy was selected to present the golden apple to the most beautiful of three Olympian goddesses, Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. Aphrodite, being the goddess of love and beauty, won the apple on the promise of gifting Paris the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, which ultimately resulted in the famous ten-year Trojan War.
