Exclusive

Exclusive to the British Museum, a mug featuring a pattern inspired by an ancient Greek vase.

This mug forms part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Feminine power: the divine to the demonic.

The mug is made from bone china, and is microwave and dishwasher safe.

The red-figure design is based on a 4th century BC lebes gamikos, a large and elaborate vessel which was used to carry water to a bride’s bath before her wedding in ancient Greek tradition. This gamikos from Campania, now Southern Italy, dates to c.340-320 BC, and features an image of the goddess of love, Aphrodite, using a bird to toy with a cat. She is waited on by an attendant holding an apple, and both figures are surrounded by swirling patterns, palmettes and other motifs typical of Greek style pottery. Aphrodite was culturally extremely important to young brides, who had little or no influence in the choosing of their future husbands, so would pray to the goddess of love to provide a worthy match for them, or to bless their union.

A gorgeous gift for a lover of ancient Greek art.
