Bes Amulet Print

The print is part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Hieroglyphs: unlocking ancient Egypt.

The image on the print is of a blue glazed composition amulet representing the household god Bes. Often depicted as a dwarf-like being with a lion’s mane and protruding tongue, Bes was the god of fertility in ancient Egyptian belief and was believed to drive away evil. Ornaments of the god were often placed around the home to protect the inhabitants and bring happiness.
