Part of the Book of the Dead range, this umbrella features a scene from the Book of the Dead of Hunefer, Egypt, c.1280 BC.

Ancient Egyptian ?Books of the Dead? were used to help the deceased pass through the dangers of the underworld? and be reborn into a new life. The books consist of a series of magical texts, or ?spells?, which deal with different areas and events in the next world. The texts are often accompanied by pictures which illustrate the spells.

About 200 spells are known, though the spells written on individual papyri vary widely. The British Museum holds probably the most extensive collection of the texts, representing all the phases of the Book of the Dead?s use.

The collection includes manuscripts of unique importance such as those of Ani and Hunefer.
