The original bronze sculpture was discovered by locals digging an air-raid shelter in 1969 along with hundreds of other bronzes in the tomb of an army general from the Han Dynasty (AD 25-220) in Leitai, Wuwei County in the Gansu Province. The horse is now housed at the Gansu Provincial Museum, and is forbidden to be removed from mainland China.
