Exclusive

Exclusive to the British Museum, a children’s pencil case inspired by ancient Egyptian canopic jars.

The pencil case is part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Hieroglyphs: unlocking ancient Egypt.

This pencil case features a design of all four traditional jars against a pale blue background. The reverse is a deep green, and is decorated with hieroglyph symbols, and the pencil case is finished with a zip.

Canopic jars were used by the Ancient Egyptians during the mummification process to store and preserve the internal organs of the deceased for the afterlife. Originally plain in design, by the Nineteenth Dynasty, the lids would commonly feature depictions of the four sons of Horus, each associated with a single organ; baboon-headed Hapi with the lungs, jackal-headed Duamutef with the stomach, falcon-headed Qebehsenuef with the intestines, and the human-headed Imsety with the liver.

A characterful stationery gift for children.
