Elaborate stylised knots are among the most recognisable features of Celtic art. Symbolising the continuity of life, knots were carved into wood, stone and metal, and were found on crosses, tools, buildings and jewellery.

The Celtic culture spread across much of Europe during the Middle Age, and its Insular La Tène style, characterised by intricate knots and skilful metalwork, reached Britain in around the 3^rd century, and many examples of Celtic stone carvings are still standing.
