Exclusive

Exclusive to the British Museum, a children’s tote bag with a design inspired by traditional ancient Egyptian canopic jars.

The bag is part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Hieroglyphs: unlocking ancient Egypt.

This mini tote bag is made in the UK from bleached canvas with fabric handles. Alongside the canopic jar design, the bag features hieroglyph symbols in contrasting dark blue.

Canopic jars were used by the Ancient Egyptians during the mummification process to store and preserve the internal organs of the deceased for the afterlife. Originally plain in design, by the Nineteenth Dynasty, the lids would commonly feature depictions of the four sons of Horus, each associated with a single organ; baboon-headed Hapi with the lungs, jackal-headed Duamutef with the stomach, falcon-headed Qebehsenuef with the intestines, and the human-headed Imsety with the liver.

A wonderful history-inspired children’s gift.
