Chinese Phoenix Robe Keyring
Exclusive to the British Museum, a metal and enamel keyring inspired by Empress Dowager Cixi’s kesi robe with a swooping phoenix and peacock motif.
This keyring forms part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition China’s hidden century.
The design is based on a purple, gold and turquoise robe which belonged to Empress Dowager Cixi. The kesi robe incorporates Japanese Meiji-period motifs from contemporary kimono designs, such as the swooping phoenix with a peacock tail.
Empress Dowager Cixi was the de-facto ruler of China from 1861 – 1908. She owned hundreds of silk robes and changed her costumes about ten times a day. Her robes were always beautifully embroidered and made in her textile workshop, under her supervision, by skilled artisans.
A unique souvenir of the exhibition.
