Egyptian Hieroglyphs Leather Bookmark
Exclusive to the British Museum, a leather bookmark inspired by the ancient Egyptian hieroglyph alphabet.
The bookmark is part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Hieroglyphs: unlocking ancient Egypt.
This bookmark is made in the UK from genuine leather.
The design is inspired by the hieroglyph symbols featured on a watercolour study by Henry Beechey (1788/9-1862), of an ancient Egyptian wall painting from the tomb of Pharaoh Sety (Seti) I. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs were developed c.3000 BC, and were used for formal inscriptions. The alphabet is comprised of a series of symbols and characters, which includes birds, reeds and ankhs. The hieroglyphs were sometimes called ‘The Words of the Gods’ and were mainly used by priests.
A unique souvenir of the exhibition.
