Egyptian Senet Board Game

A replica set of the ancient Egyptian board game Senet.

This game is part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Hieroglyphs: unlocking ancient Egypt.  

The game set is crafted from wood, and includes shaped wooden playing pieces, dice, and a board with a pull-out drawer to store the pieces. The sides of the board are decorated with hieroglyph symbols.

The game of Senet was played in ancient Egypt for thousands of years, with the earliest depiction of the game dating to around 2620 BC, although it likely existed before this. Tomb paintings of the game being played, textual references to senet, and game sets have been found throughout the ancient Egyptian kingdom. The original rules are lost to time, however using the existing sources of senet gameplay as a guide, a modern version of the game has been theorised. This set includes a set of instructions.
