A blue hippo ornament based on an original from ancient Egypt. This small replica measures 7cm long.

Although the male hippopotamus is represented in Egyptian mythology as a dangerous and destructive animal, this is not true of the female. In this representation, the hippopotamus stands placidly gazing straight ahead and is probably female. The body is decorated with marsh flowers and plants of her natural habitat.

The original, made in glazed composition, dates from the Middle Kingdom, about 1850 BC. This version is copied from the original in the Department of Egyptian Antiquities at the British Museum.
