Ejiri in Suruga Province Mounted Postcard
A mounted postcard of Sunshu Ejiri (Ejiri in Suruga Province), 1831, Katsushika Hokusai.
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a Japanese artist best known for his vibrant and detailed woodblock prints. He is widely considered one of Japan’s most famous and influential artists.
The woodblock print forms part of Hokusai's series Fugaku sanjurokkei (Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji). Ejiri was a post-station on the Tokaido Highway on the west side of Suruga Bay, modern Shimizu ward in Shizuoka city. The depicted desolate area is thought to be around Ubaga-ike (‘Old Woman Pool’) with the road snaking through a marsh. The silhouette of Mt Fuji, drawn with a single line, provides an elusive backdrop to the figures and trees in the foreground battling a strong wind.
An extraordinary piece of home art celebrating Hokusai’s work.
