The ink drawing depicts the figure from Chinese mythology, Hou Yi (also Shen Yi) who was often named Lord Archer, shooting the sun. The inscription reads "At the time of Emperor Yao, he used a bow to shoot nine suns / Imperial general Hou Yi".
