About Beatrix Potter in the British Museum

Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) was an English writer, illustrator, natural scientist, and conservationist best known for her children's books featuring animals, such as those in The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

The 'real' Peter Rabbit was a Belgian buck rabbit called Peter Piper that was, as wrote Potter later, 'bought at a very tender age, in the Uxbridge Road, Shepherd's Bush, for the exorbitant sum of 4/6'.

After her death, her folio of The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies came into the possession of and is currently owned by the British Museum.

An example of one of Potter's hand-drawn images owned by the Museum and featuring the beloved Peter Rabbit can be found in the Prints & Drawings department.
