A beautiful disc pendant inspired by an ancient Roman design.

The pendant contains a garnet stone, and is a copy of an artefact which dates to around the 4th or 3rd centuries BC. The original pendant was made from gold with a cabochon (un-faceted) garnet stone set in its centre. Delicate gold filigree was added to accentuate the detailed pattern of the trinket.

Jewellery was worn by most people in ancient Rome, and its quality would generally reveal the wearer’s wealth and social status. Gold and brightly coloured gemstones were among the favourite features of ancient Roman jewellery, and surviving pieces are noteworthy for their beauty and craftsmanship.

A wonderful souvenir of the British Museum’s ancient Roman collection.
