<p>In ancient Egypt, it was believed that most deities were able to take the form of a sacred animal in order to appear on earth. Not all members of a species were considered sacred; only those lucky enough to be chosen to live in a temple as the gods representative were revered.</p>

The original sculpture is a bronze cat figure from the Late Period of Ancient Egypt. The cat represents the goddess Bastet, and is named after Major Robert Grenville Gayer-Anderson who donated the cat to the British Museum in 1939.
